Creating and Managing Variants in SureCart
This article will show you how to make different versions of a product. By the end, you’ll be good at creating great product options quickly.
When you work with variations, SureCart has two sections: Inventory and Variants on the Edit Product page. We’ll explain these sections in detail.
What is a Product Variant?
A product variant is like a different version of a product. For example, think of T-shirts. T-shirts can come in various combinations of colors and sizes.
Instead of making separate listings for each color and size, you can create one listing and let customers choose the color and size they want. This makes shopping easier, helps you organize your products better, and makes things smoother for customers.
Let’s get started on how to create these product variations.
How to Create Variations in SureCart
Creating variations for your product is a straightforward process. Navigate to the “Variants” section located just below the “Inventory.”
- To create a variant, click on the “Add Options Like Size or Color” button.
- In the “Option Name” field, provide a relevant name. For our example, we’ve named it “Color.”
- In the “Option Value” field, enter a name that represents the option. In our case, we added two values: one for “White” and one for “Black.”
Please note: “Option Name” and “Option Values” are not internal names; they will also be visible on the front end, so ensure you use descriptive names. - Once you are satisfied with this variant, click on the “Done” button.
- Let’s add more options. To do this, click on the “Add More Options” button.
- For our example, we are going to add the variant “Size,” since a t-shirt can also have multiple sizes.
- Add all the options for the sizes you need. In our example, we added only sizes S, M, L, which represent Small, Medium, and Large. Click the “Done” button to confirm the values.
While you were entering the variants, a table for each variant was created dynamically, as shown in the screenshot below.
Customizing Variations
Once you’ve created the variations, you can now set a different price per variation (if the product has just one pricing), adjust the quantity, define SKUs, and assign variant images.
- To add an image for each variant, click on the image placeholder of the variant.
- Upload or select the image that represents this variant, and then click the “Choose 1 file” button.
- To change the price for the specific variant, just type the value there. If you don’t enter any value, it will use the pricing you set on the product, whether it’s One Time, Subscription, or Installment. If you do not see this column, it’s because you have multiple prices for your product, which cannot be overridden on a variant level.
- If you have stock enabled, you can adjust the stock for each variant. If you do not see this, you will want to enable inventory control for your product.
For more about managing the number of products and SKU, we made another article called “Inventory Management in SureCart.” That article can help you understand it better.
- Lastly, add a SKU for each variant. In our example, we used “TSHIRT-WHITE-S” as the SKU for the White / Small variant.
Please note that in some cases, you can have a negative stock quantity.
Deleting and Adding a Custom Variant
Once you’ve created the variants, you can manually add or delete a specific variant. However, please note that this setting will affect each variant individually and will not delete or add all instances of the variant at once.
Deleting a Specific Variant
- To delete a specific variant, click on the three-dot menu associated with the variant you wish to remove.
- On the menu, click on the “Delete” button. The variant will be crossed out, indicating that it will be deleted. The deletion will only occur when you click on the “Save Product” button. You can also remove the variant image if you wish.
Adding a Custom Variant
- To add a specific variant, click on the “Add Variant” button located at the top right of the Variants section.
- Enter all the details of the variant, and once you are content with the changes, click on the “Add Variant” button.
- To save all your progress, click on the “Save Product” button located at the top right corner of the screen.
Customizing the Product Page Variant Block
You can customize the look and feel of the product variant block to better suit your brand’s style. If you are unfamiliar with customizing a product template, please refer to the guide on “How to Customize a Product Template.“
- In the Edit Product screen, navigate to Edit template and click on the Product Variants block.
- You’ll find various settings in the right column that you can adjust to align with your brand identity.
Please note, if you have previously edited your product template and the variants block doesn’t appear,, you will need to add the product variants block manually.
Create Manual Order With Variants
Creating a manual order with product variants follows a process similar to that of non-variant products. The primary distinction lies in variant products displaying the stock quantity and the variant name, as you can see from the screenshot below.
Upgrade a Variant Subscription
The process of enabling your customers to upgrade or downgrade their subscription is quite similar to non-variant products. You can refer to the guide “What is the Upgrade Group in SureCart?” for detailed instructions on setting up the upgrade/downgrade option.
For customers, the process to upgrade or downgrade a subscription remains consistent with the guidelines provided in the “How Customers Can Upgrade/Downgrade a Subscription” guide. However, an additional step is necessary: the “Choose a Variation” step, as you can see from the screenshot below.
